2023 APP Sunmed Sacramento Open Preview

The stage is set for the APP Tour’s fourth tournament of 2023 – the APP Sunmed Sacramento Open. Five days of world-class pickleball action awaits from Johnson Ranch Pickleball Complex in Roseville, CA, starting Wednesday, April 26.

More than 700 players, including 500 amateurs, will participate in the 2023 APP Sunmed Sacramento Open. Amateurs, pros, and senior pros will participate in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competition throughout the week.

The 2023 APP Sunmed Sacramento Open will be streamed live on APPTV – available on the APP Tour YouTube and Facebook pages – on Saturday, Apr. 29 starting at 1 pm PT and Sunday, Apr. 30, starting at 10 am PT. Additionally, a one-hour Championship Sunday recap special will air on CBS Sports Network on Monday, May 1 at 7 pm ET.  

Spectator tickets for the event are available via Eventbrite.com; Walk-up tickets for single-day sessions will also be available for purchase at the venue with doors opening at 8 am PT each day.

Among the top pros participating are Parris Todd, Hunter and Yates Johnson, Megan Fudge, Simone Jardim, Andrei Daescu, Susannah Barr, and Pesa Teoni.

Parris Todd leads all APP pros with eight total medals and six gold medals in 2023. The Fort Myers resident won her third-consecutive women’s pro doubles gold alongside Simone Jardim at the 2023 APP Mesa Open in March, while also earning silver in mixed pro doubles alongside Hunter Johnson. At the season-opening 2023 APP Sunmed Punta Gorda Open, she became only the second woman in APP history to earn a Triple Crown with three gold medals.

Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson continued their hot start to 2023 in Mesa. Hunter took home his third-straight men’s pro singles gold – defeating Eduardo Irizarry in the final. The brothers then teamed up to earn silver in men’s pro doubles, and Hunter earned another silver alongside Parris Todd in mixed pro doubles. 

Jardim, one of the sport’s elite veterans, took home a her third-straight women’s pro doubles gold alongside Parris Todd and a bronze in women’s singles at the APP Mesa Open.

At the same event, Daescu and Pesa Teoni teamed up to win men’s pro doubles gold medals, earning Teoni his first-ever pro gold medal and Daescu his third-straight men’s doubles gold to begin the year. Daescu also earned another gold in mixed pro doubles alongside Susannah Barr. 

Barr broke through in Mesa, taking home her first gold medal of 2023 with a mixed doubles victory alongside Andrei Daescu. The Boise, Idaho resident also earned her second-straight silver medal alongside Megan Fudge in women’s doubles. 

Among the players to watch in Sacramento are Fudge, who earned two more silvers in Mesa, William Sobek and Christian Keenum, who battled their way to a bronze medal in men’s pro doubles, and Brendon Long, who won gold in Daytona Beach and bronze in Mesa for mixed pro doubles.
