2023 PPA Tour Rule Changes

The PPA Tour instituted some changes in its rules at the beginning of 2023 for its pro and senior open brackets and has amended some other rules.

Here’s a quick reminder of what’s happening on tour:

Service Motion: If the referee determines one of the three criteria for an illegal service motion – paddle above wrist, no upward arc, contact above waist – the referee will immediately stop play and call a serve warning. A re-serve will be called. The ball is considered “dead” as soon as the referee stops play and the result of the serve is irrelevant.

The PPA will allow for one warning. Another violation of the illegal service motion will be a fault.

Let Serve Replay: There is no more replaying of a “let” serve.

“Spin” Serves: If the referee detects any amount of spin added to the serve release, a re-serve will be called.

“Drop” Serves: “Drop” serves, which were previously not allowed, are now allowed.

Player-Position Errors: Players and the referee will proactively prevent the server and the receiver from being in the wrong position. The referee will make sure there are no player or positioning faults before the score is called. If the referee sees this, corrections will be made before the score is called.

If the error is not corrected before the serve and the error is identified during the rally by any players or the referee, the rally will be replayed.

If the error is not discovered until after the rally is completed, the rally will stand. There will be no replay.

Video Replays: Players will have the ability to use video replay challenges on all matches on Championship Court. The “Tracking Referee” will review all video challenges.
